A Federal High Court in Kaduna on Tuesday. sentenced a 26- year-old man, Abel Godwin to three years imprisonment for unlawful possession of hard drugs.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Prosecuting Counsel, Mr T. J. Atserhegh, said the convict, who lives in Malali, Kaduna State, was arrested on April 4, by officials of the agency.
The anti drug agency charged Godwin with unlawful possession of hard drugs including 3kg of Cannabis, 5kg of Tramadol and 8g of Exol-5, similar to cocaine and narcotic.
The offence, the prosecution said, contravened the provisions of Section 19 of NDLEA Act, Cap. N30 Law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004 (as amended), ’’ he said.
When the charge was read to Godwin, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.
Atserhegh, however, told the court that the suspect was a second offender, having been jailed for six month sometimes in February 2025 by the Federal High Court.
The judge, Justice Mohammed Garba, sentenced Godwin to one year imprisonment for each of the three counts without an option of fine.
“The sentences of one year for each of the three-count charge will run consecutively totalling three years in all, without any option of fine.
“This is to serve as a deterrent to others, considering your age and your determination to be a notorious criminal, ’’ the judge held.
Garba ordered the hard drugs tendered as exhibits to be destroyed by the NDLEA after 30 days of the court’s judgment.
