A political advocacy group, Loudest Voice for Dr. Peter Mbah, has called on Enugu State Governor to nominate a woman to fill the vacant Enugu North Senatorial seat in the National Assembly.
The loudest voice, who is also the convener of the programme and invited six other support groups, said that the move would mark a historic milestone, as it would be the first time a woman would represent the state in the Senate.
The support groups included: City Boys Movement; Umunda Peter Mbah Worldwide; Jesus Wives Prayer Network; Women Support Women For Human Empowerment and Mentorship Initiative (WOSUWO); NCWS; and Resilience Divine Widows.
The Convener of the group, Amb. Onyinye Mamah, made the appeal while briefing journalists on Saturday in Enugu, noting that nominating a woman would not only promote gender inclusivity but also strengthen democratic representation in the state.
Mamah emphasised that many women in Enugu North senatorial district, particularly in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, have the competence, experience, and capacity required for effective representation.
She argued that giving a woman the opportunity to occupy the senatorial seat would align with ongoing calls for greater female participation in governance across Nigeria.
“Our dear governor, we the women of Enugu State love you very much. You are the pride of Enugu State.
“We thank you for what you have been doing and one you are yet to do. We are happy to have a governor who you do not struggle to explain women inclusion in politics.
“You have included women in your government but as Oliver Twist, we are asking for more,” Mamah added.
Another member of the group, Mrs Ifeyinwa Ojukwu, urged political stakeholders and relevant authorities to support the nomination of a qualified female candidate, stressing that such a decision would set a progressive precedent for other states to emulate.
Ojukwu reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the policies and leadership of Gov. Mbah, while expressing confidence that he would consider their appeal in the interest of equity and inclusive governance.
The senatorial seat became vacant following the demise of Senator Okey Ezea, prompting consultations among political actors on who should succeed him.
